Since its formation back in 1995, Slipknot has proven itself to be one of the craziest bands of all time with its aggressive style of music and its energetic and chaotic live shows. Furthermore, nearly all the band members have one or two jaw-dropping stories that may horrify and surprise you.
However, the essence of Slipknot’s music and artistry comes from these mind-blowing stories of the band members that often include peculiar liquids, rituals, and dares. For the past 26 years, they managed to live up to their fans’ expectations, and there was one time they exceeded even beyond these expectations. Let’s see why Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan carried a dead crow in a jar around for his bandmates to breath.
Slipknot Smelled A Dead Crow To Feel Death Before A Show
There’s no doubt that every musician has a unique ritual before a live performance to get them in the mood, which usually involves meditation, prayer, or something spiritual. Often, these rituals have nothing to do with death, an animal, or eating a dead animal, but this time it has because we’re talking about Slipknot.
Before the band rose to fame, Slipknot came up with one of the most unexpected rituals for their live performances. Percussionist Shawn Crahan kept a deceased crow in a jar which he let decompose for a very long time. The band members smelt the dead bird before each show to feel the death before their performance.
They often smell the rotting bird on stage, which would make them throw up immediately in their masks. DJ Said Wilson gave a detailed explanation of this ritual during an interview with SPIN Magazine and admitted that the dead bird sometimes turned into liquid gelatin since the band kept it for a long time.
DJ Sid Wilson said about the ritual:
“We had a dead bird in a jar. Clown kept it in there for a long time. We’d bring it out on stage and take big deep breaths out of it, see what death smelled like, have that inside you, gets you in that dark place. It would make you throw up immediately, vomit in your mask. He had it in there for so long it started getting this gelatinous liquid in the jar as it decayed.”
Although it’s Slipknot we’re talking about, this whole ceremony sounds just insane considering how they were sniffing a rotting animal to understand death. Fortunately for the fans, the band is no longer carrying the jar with a dead animal.
