Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde was interviewed by Guitar World and talked about the milestone records that changed his music career. He recalled working with the late Pantera icon Dimebag Darrell for an album.
Following Pantera’s breakup, the brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott founded their new band Damageplan in 2003. The band was able to release only one record entitled ‘New Found Power’ on February 10, 2004, before Darrell’s murder on December 8, 2004.
For their debut album, the Abbot brothers teamed up with Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde. Wylde performed the second guitar solo on ‘Reborn’ which he regarded as one of the most important musical projects that he was involved in. Then, Wylde stated that Dimebag Darrel asked him to play a guitar solo in their album when he was in town.
Thanks to a drinking session with the late musician, the guitarist decided to contribute to ‘New Found Power’ and told Dimebag he would be willing to do whatever he wanted. He added that he still can’t forget when he joined Pantera on the stage with his dog during one of their shows in 2000.
In Wylde’s words, he said:
“Dime was in town, and he was like, ‘Zakk, you want to put a solo on something?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, Dime, whatever you want me to do, man.’ So that’s how that came about – another drinking session o’ doom with the Dimebag. That’s the only time we recorded together.
Although I also remember going down to a Pantera show and getting on stage and jamming with them. I walked out, I think it was at Irvine Meadows or something like that, and I had my dog, Dorian, with me, my Rottweiler.
You can see it on YouTube – ‘Zakk Walks Onstage with his Dog’ or something like that. Dime gave me his guitar, and it was at the end of one of their songs, just ending on E or something like that, and I started noodling.”
