Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante has shared an emotional tribute to Rush following the legendary Canadian rock band’s recent comeback performances. He described the experience as nothing short of transformative. Benante, who attended multiple shows during Rush’s 2026 reunion tour, expressed profound gratitude for the band’s influence on his musical career and their continued ability to captivate audiences.

“Rush, what can I say but Thank You?” Benante stated. “They have been a guiding force in my musical career. They showed me that you can do this by connecting with your audience, not the radio play. They showed us that a record sold was a ticket sold—they figured it out!”

The drummer recalled his first encounter with Rush during the Permanent Waves tour. This experience set the trajectory for his lifelong fandom. “I saw them for the first time on the Permanent Waves tour and never missed them after that,” Benante explained. “The phrase ‘going to church’ is something I’d say to describe their performance. It’s like a religious experience—the energy, the love, the everything! When I was younger, I was so inspired by them that I would run home from school and play along to their records. I would learn every drumming phrase, beat, and fill. Those Neil ride patterns were so important to the song; they drove it!”

Benante’s admiration extended to his observations of the band’s current performances. “Seeing them this week inspired me once again,” he noted. “Talking to Alex about the step up from Hemispheres to Permanent Waves was a conversation I’ve waited years to have. I have always said that Alex is one of the greatest guitarists. The way he can make one guitar sound like three is amazing. Geddy is just another level of class and musicianship. Watching him this week made me see again how ‘the music takes over.'”

Rush’s 2026 comeback, officially dubbed the “Fifty Something” Tour, marks the band’s first major touring effort since their R40 Live run in 2015. The tour began on June 7, 2026, at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. This was the same venue where Rush performed their final show of the R40 Live tour eleven years prior. The symbolic return to the same stage underscored the significance of the reunion for both the band and their devoted fanbase.

The current touring lineup features Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson as the core members. German drummer Anika Nilles handles percussion duties, and Loren Gold plays keyboards. Anika Nilles’ addition to the lineup represents a notable evolution for the band. She brings fresh energy to Rush’s classic material while honoring the legacy of the late Neil Peart. The decision to continue performing with a new drummer demonstrates the band’s commitment to keeping Rush’s music alive for both longtime fans and new generations of listeners.

The tour has already delivered memorable performances across multiple cities. Shows are scheduled throughout 2026 and into 2027. Recent performances have included multiple nights at major venues, with setlists featuring deep cuts and fan favorites alike. During the recent shows Benante attended, Rush performed “Witch Hunt” and the complete “Moving Pictures” album. This showcased the band’s dedication to delivering comprehensive performances that celebrate their entire catalog.

Benante concluded his tribute with heartfelt thanks to all involved in making the reunion possible. “These guys love playing and the music keeps them youthful. They have made me happy for so many years and still continue to. Thank you to Geddy, Alex, Anika and Loren for 3 great shows. Thank you to a bunch of great people for this week’s festivities—Jaime Horton and crew, Geddy, Alex, Neil, everyone at QP. They did play ‘Witch Hunt’ and Moving Pictures in its entirety. Alex played a killer Explorer on W.H.” His words captured the essence of what Rush’s comeback represents: a celebration of musical excellence, enduring artistry, and the profound connection between performers and their audience.
