Journey guitarist Neal Schon has moved to clarify his position following controversial comments made by his bandmate, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who publicly criticized Bruce Springsteen’s political commentary. Schon shared a quote from a recent San Francisco Chronicle article that detailed Cain’s remarks and Schon’s actual stance on the matter. He sought to separate himself from the attack after Cain received significant backlash for his statements.

The article Neal Schon posted explained:  “The connection between Journey guitarist Neal Schon and Bruce Springsteen stems from recent comments made not by Schon, but by his Journey bandmate, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who publicly criticized Springsteen’s political commentary.”

Jonathan Cain’s criticism of Springsteen was blunt and unfiltered. In a recent podcast interview, Cain said: “We’re blessed to live where we live. And I’m obviously a conservative. I used to be a Democrat back in the old days, but I couldn’t go there anymore. I thought [Barack] Obama maybe, but then I saw where he was going and I’m, like, ‘Okay, we can’t have this anymore.’ So I’m a diehard conservative. And guys like Bruce Springsteen should shut up. Honestly, shut up, Bruce. Who’s the other one? Robert De Niro. I mean, who cares, guys? Really? Do your art. And Bruce, I mean, what the heck? I used to like him, and now he’s just annoying. He’s an annoying, bitter old man. I mean, stop it. Really. You were born in the USA, weren’t you, dude? So act like it. But even that song [Springsteen’s ‘Born In The USA’], if you look at the lyrics, it’s a kind of a diss to our country.”

Schon’s decision to publicly distance himself from these remarks reflects deeper tensions within Journey as the legendary rock band navigates its final chapter. The band is currently in the midst of its Final Frontier farewell tour. The tour kicked off in February 2026 in Hershey, Pennsylvania and is scheduled to conclude in November 2026 in San Francisco. Internal conflicts between Schon and Cain have continued to simmer despite the ongoing tour. Legal battles and political disagreements have created friction within the band’s ranks.

The conflict between Schon and Cain extends beyond this particular incident with Springsteen. The two musicians have been engaged in lawsuits and have publicly clashed over various issues. These include the direction of the band and their differing political viewpoints. Schon has been explicit in stating that while the Final Frontier tour marks Journey’s farewell, it does not necessarily mean the rest of the band members will stop performing or pursuing musical endeavors after the tour concludes. This statement underscores the fractured nature of the band’s unity during what should be a celebratory final tour.

Cain has indicated his intention to retire from Journey following the completion of the farewell tour. He has remained an active member throughout the 2026 tour dates. His public comments about Springsteen and other celebrities have added another layer of controversy to an already turbulent period for the rock institution.

The broader context of these tensions reveals a band struggling to maintain cohesion during its sunset years. Journey’s 52-year career has been marked by numerous lineup changes and creative differences. The Final Frontier tour has amplified existing conflicts rather than providing a harmonious conclusion to their legacy. Schon’s effort to distance himself from Cain’s remarks about Springsteen suggests an attempt to prevent the band’s internal politics from overshadowing the significance of their farewell performances and their enduring musical contributions to rock history.
