Spiritbox singer Courtney LaPlante recently sat down with Zach Sang Show to discuss the hidden meaning behind their new single, ‘Soft Spine,’ and what inspired her to write such a song.

“I’m not someone who likes to have a lot of outward drama but internally there’s a lot of people that I don’t just feel like neutral about in our industry,” LaPlante explained. “I have full-on strong feelings towards them, and that song really made me feel like the fantasy that people have of the maximum stress they could put on someone they don’t like.”

The singer continued: “But of course, those things are just a fantasy. In reality, I don’t have that power to metaphorically annihilate someone. I don’t have that power leverage in my life right now. But the fantasy of feeling you have that power professionally to rise above people that you don’t like is very empowering for me. I hope someday it’s not a fantasy but a reality.”

She added: “The more social currency I have and the more professional currency I have to make actual changes around who gets to take our nice listeners’ hard-earned money and who doesn’t. Sometimes negativity really drives people.”

Spiritbox released ‘Soft Spine’ in September this year. The track shows a heavier side of the band, featuring djent-infused riffs and sharp production. It also marks the band’s first original release since their 2023 EP, ‘The Fear of Fear.’

While the song is still fresh and heavier compared to their previous tracks, Spiritbox’s 2023 song ‘Cellar Door’ was nominated for a Grammy. “I can’t believe it,” LaPlante said of her nomination in another chat. “I’m so excited. And I was so surprised last year when we were nominated. To be nominated again off the same body of work is such an honor.”

LaPlante also shared her excitement about the increasing number of women being nominated for the Best Metal Performance Grammy. “I’m almost 36 years old. 36 years, a woman’s never won. And now there’s more chances than ever for a woman to win,” she said. “So I’m really excited. I hope that we win. I hope that Knocked Loose and Poppy win. Or if Gojira wins, there’s a woman who’s an opera singer on that song. So there’s three out of five chances for that ceiling, that glass ceiling to finally shatter.”

Spiritbox is nominated for ‘Cellar Door,’ Gojira for ‘Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!),’ Knocked Loose and Poppy for ‘Suffocate,’ Judas Priest for ‘Crown of Horns,’ and Metallica for ‘Screaming Suicide.’
