Slipknot guitarist Jim Root has provided an exciting update on the band’s creative progress. The Iowa metal legends have accumulated at least 50 song ideas as they work toward their eighth studio album. Speaking on the RIDE BYND podcast, Root detailed the band’s intensive writing and arrangement process, describing sessions that yield multiple musical concepts in extended jam sessions.

“We’ll jam for like an hour and a half, two hours, and we might get four song ideas out of that and then we just spend time arranging, and it’s so organic and it’s so real. It’s almost frightening,” Root explained. The guitarist emphasized the excitement surrounding the new material and noted that the band is experiencing a renewed sense of purpose in their songwriting approach.

Root’s comments underscore a significant shift in Slipknot’s creative direction. The band is exploring sonic territory that pushes beyond their established sound while maintaining the core identity that has defined their legacy. Root described the new material as featuring an eclectic range of influences and styles, from aggressive to experimental. This suggests a more adventurous approach to their upcoming release.

The creative momentum behind this album represents a pivotal moment for Slipknot. The band’s eighth studio album marks their first project following the conclusion of their long-standing partnership with Roadrunner Records. This signals a new era of independence for the metal pioneers. The shift in their business structure has coincided with a notable evolution in their musical approach. The band is working with producer Matt Wallace, the acclaimed producer known for his work on landmark Faith No More albums.

The addition of drummer Eloy Casagrande has also contributed to the fresh energy surrounding the project. Casagrande joined the band in 2024 following Jay Weinberg’s departure. He is formerly of Brazilian metal titans Sepultura and brings a distinct rhythmic perspective to the band’s sound. The combination of a new drummer, independent status, and experienced production guidance has created an environment where the band feels liberated to explore new creative avenues.

Root’s description of the musical palette being developed reveals the ambitious scope of the new material. The guitarist noted that he is crafting some of the fastest grindcore-influenced riffs of his career. He is also creating melodic, heavy, and doomy passages alongside these aggressive elements. The inclusion of beautiful clean interludes and experimental elements suggests a more textured and dynamic album compared to recent releases. Root hinted at influences beyond traditional metal, referencing a sonic wheelhouse that evokes the progressive experimentation of Pink Floyd. This indicates that Slipknot is willing to venture into less conventional territory.

The guitarist expressed profound satisfaction with the direction of the new material. “This is the closest I’ve heard to the music that I can hear in my head that I can’t get out that I’ve ever been. And it’s exciting. And it’s like breathing a new life into wanting to create,” Root stated. His comments convey the personal investment and enthusiasm driving the current project. The band members are experiencing a genuine reconnection with their creative impulses, moving beyond the constraints that may have limited their artistic expression in the past.

The stockpile of 50 song ideas represents an abundance of material from which the band can select and refine their strongest compositions. This approach allows Slipknot to be selective in their final album curation, ensuring that only the most compelling and cohesive material makes the cut. The iterative process Root described mirrors the methodology the band employed during the creation of their 2019 album “We Are Not Your Kind.” This demonstrates a return to proven creative strategies that have yielded successful results in recent years.
