Devin Townsend recently announced the release of his upcoming Dreampeace album, Harmonic Dharma, while also reflecting on the financial difficulties and personal challenges that influenced his recent decisions, as shared on Instagram.
The announcement detailed the inspiration behind the new ambient project, which was created to help listeners find rest and manage sleep issues.
“In recognition of World Mental Health Day, we’re excited to announce Devin’s forthcoming Dreampeace album, ‘Harmonic Dharma,’ arriving Friday October 16th,” the announcement read. “Having struggled with insomnia for many years, Devin created DreamPeace as a way to encourage restful sleep and, hopefully, enrich the lives of others who struggle to unwind.”
The release will initially be available in physical format before hitting digital streaming platforms.
“We decided to release this new DreamPeace album as a limited-edition CD, available on the Metamorphosis tour,” the statement continued. “Any remaining copies are now being offered to Devin’s Patreon community first, ahead of the album’s release on all streaming platforms on October 16th.”
This announcement comes after Townsend previously opened up about the severe financial strain he faced following a major project, which ultimately forced him to return to touring sooner than expected.
The new album arrives at the end of a turbulent stretch for Townsend, one that traces back to the ambitious orchestral project The Moth and the fallout that followed it.
The Moth premiered at De Oosterpoort in Groningen, Netherlands, on March 27–28, 2025. It was later issued by InsideOut Music as a connected three-part release — The Moth, The Afterlife and The War — including a live recording of the premiere. Those performances marked Townsend’s most ambitious work to date and came at a significant creative and logistical cost.
Townsend announced an indefinite hiatus from touring in 2025 following The Moth’s live debut. He then returned home to finish the project’s studio album, which arrived on May 29 via InsideOut Music, before eventually resuming live performances with his solo Metamorphosis tour. That return to the stage ultimately placed him on the road once again as Harmonic Dharma was being prepared for release.
Townsend has since spoken about the toll that making The Moth took on him, offering further context for the quieter direction of the new Dreampeace record.
“As you guys know, making ‘The Moth’ album was so creatively and logistically ambitious, it took me mentally to a challenging place on so many occasions,” Townsend said.
Against that backdrop, Harmonic Dharma represents a deliberate shift in tone, trading orchestral scale for the calm, restorative purpose behind the Dreampeace project.
“Financial Armageddon,” Townsend explained. “Yeah, we lost a ton of money off of ‘The Moth’ show, for a number of reasons, which we’re still trying to remedy it, but it’s been over a year. But the company I did a lot of the work for it went bankrupt, and so we lost what our projected revenue was for that year. So I just found myself in a situation where the options for me to do other things for money just seemed limited. So I know it’s not a particularly romantic notion, but it’s the truth.”
In addition to financial setbacks, Townsend also touched upon the personal losses he has had to navigate during this period.
“My dog passed away,” he added. “I split up with a partner of 36 years. I mean, it’s like all these things have been fucking devastating. And you’re up on stage. So I think that the one thing that I’ve recognized through this is it’s, like, well, I have to do this, just on a practical level. But on another level, it’s funny how these things force you into a, a position where you have to contend with yourself.”
The album is scheduled to be released on all streaming platforms on October 16, 2026.
