Dream Theater bassist John Myung revealed the reasoning behind Mike Portnoy’s return to the band in a recent interview with A&P-Reacts. The band decided to bring back their original drummer to recapture their most successful era.

“We were like ‘Well, let’s go back and write an album like we used to.’ In order to do that we need Mike [Portnoy] back,” Myung explained. “And Mike was ready to come back.”

“He had a conversation with the few of us and we had a meeting. And it made sense,” he continued. “As a band we want to go back to where we were where we felt that we were the strongest. And that’s when we were at our best. So, have him comeback and to revisit that chemistry and to write the album that we did it. All came together really nicely.”

This reunion represents a significant milestone in Dream Theater’s history. It brings together the elements that defined their classic sound.

Modern Drummer reports that Portnoy’s 2023 return ended a 13-year separation from the band he helped found. His 2010 departure had marked the conclusion of Dream Theater’s original lineup era.

Portnoy maintained an active presence in the music industry during his time away from Dream Theater. He channeled his creative energy into various successful projects.

Loudwire documents the reunion’s first major achievement with the release of ‘Parasomnia’ on February 7, 2025. This album marks Portnoy’s first recording with Dream Theater in 15 years.

The album signifies more than just a reunion. It demonstrates a purposeful return to the band’s signature sound that established them as progressive metal pioneers.
