Rush’s Geddy Lee recently opened up about the emotional weight of singing the late Neil Peart’s lyrics alongside new drummer Anika Nilles during the band’s Fifty Something reunion tour, in an interview with Rolling Stone.

Lee explained the band’s approach to the tour and how they wanted to honor Peart’s memory without making the performances feel overly somber.

“We didn’t want it to be funereal,” Lee said. “Because we wanted everyone to remember him happily and celebrate the f*cking amazing person that he was… But I’m still processing.”

He also shared how deeply connected he feels to Peart when performing his lyrics on stage.

“If I have to sing his lyrics, I feel very close to him,” Lee continued. “It’s impossible not to, unless you’re kind of dead inside. Even just talking about it sometimes, I can’t help myself. It’s hard. There’s a part of him that will never… That grief will never completely disappear.”

Lee then discussed the audience’s reaction to the reunion tour and the significance of the band continuing to perform.

“People are responding to this tour because they need something that’s going on here,” Lee added. “And maybe there’s not enough of it right now in the world. We are a rock band. There are not a lot of us that are still going. We’re a quirky rock band, but we are still out there. Trying to rock.”

Geddy Lee is speaking candidly about the emotional weight of performing Neil Peart’s lyrics again. This serves as a reminder of how deeply those songs remain tied to Rush’s history and legacy.

In that context, the band’s recent reunion carries added significance. Neil Peart died on January 7, 2020, in Santa Monica, California. He passed away after a three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer. He was 67 years old. Rush said in a statement that they had lost their “bandmate of over 45 years.”

Rush announced the Fifty Something reunion tour in October 2025. This announcement came five years after Peart’s death. The tour marked the band’s first run of shows since 2015. It began with dates in Los Angeles in June 2026.

The tour was set to span 12 performances across seven cities. It was scheduled to end in Cleveland in September 2026. The announcement made clear that the run would be a major return for Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. This followed a long pause after Peart’s death.

The tour also introduces a new face behind the kit. Anika Nilles is a German drummer, educator, and bandleader. She is known for her solo work and sessions career. She was selected to join Rush for the Fifty Something tour. She built a reputation as a technically precise and highly respected modern drummer.

This makes Lee’s reflections especially poignant. Rush’s return is not only a reunion. It is also the first time the band has formally taken its music back to the stage since Peart’s death. This gives added emotional weight to every lyric and every performance.
