When The Grateful Dead emerged in the 1965 California rock scene, the members included Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann. Over the years, though, the lineup went through many changes due to various reasons we’ll now see into.

Change was a constant in the Grateful Dead’s story, starting in 1967 when Mickey Hart joined as a second drummer, adding new depth to the band’s rhythm section, according to Grunge. In 1968, Tom Constanten took over as keyboardist, contributing to the band’s psychedelic albums like ‘Anthem of the Sun’ and ‘Aoxomoxoa.’ But life on the road and personal challenges often led to shifts in the lineup.

In 1971, Hart temporarily left after discovering his father, who managed the band’s finances, had embezzled funds. Ultimate Classic Rock wrote that, around the same time, Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan’s health began to worsen due to heavy drinking. To support their sound, Keith Godchaux joined on piano, and his wife Donna Jean became a vocalist in 1972, adding harmonies to their performances. By 1979, personal struggles and creative differences led the Godchauxs to part ways with the band.

Brent Mydland took over as keyboardist in 1979 and brought a unique energy to the group, staying until his untimely death in 1990, the outlet further noted. Afterward, Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby stepped in, with Hornsby serving as a touring member. Despite the changes, the core of Garcia, Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann, and Hart remained steady until Garcia’s passing in 1995, which marked the end of the band’s original era.

The Grateful Dead’s history is marked by the loss of several members. The first one to go was Pigpen McKernan, who passed away in 1973 at just 27 due to complications from liver damage, Grunge explained. Keith Godchaux, who had replaced Pigpen on keyboards, died in a car accident in 1980, just a year after leaving the band. His wife, Donna Jean, continued to perform independently after his passing.

Brent Mydland’s death in 1990 from a drug overdose at 37 shocked fans and the band alike, according to the outlet, as he had been a vital part of their sound during the 1980s. Jerry Garcia followed suit in 1995 from a heart attack while undergoing treatment for addiction.

The band broke up following his passing. A decade later, in 2006, Vince Welnick, who was struggling with depression died by suicide.

Today, surviving Grateful Dead members include Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Tom Constanten, and Donna Jean Godchaux (per Woman’s World).

Weir remains at the forefront, performing with Dead & Company and his own band, Wolf Bros. He continues to bring the Grateful Dead’s music to new audiences while Lesh tours separately with Phil Lesh and Friends. Despite stepping back from extensive touring, Kreutzmann occasionally joins musical projects and performances.

Hart plays in Dead & Company with Weir and creates visual art through his ‘vibrational expressionism’ technique. Constanten and Godchaux occasionally take part in projects that celebrate the Grateful Dead’s songs.
