Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese shared insights about his early musical influences on Office Hours Live with Tim Heidecker. The discussion revealed the profound impact of various drummers on his career development, specifically highlighting Alex Van Halen’s musical contributions.

“There’re like five or six drummers that really like I loved as a kid and really shape me and still to this day. And not that I play like any of them but just as inspirations. The first two, and they were drastically different, but the first two were Buddy Rich and Alex Van Halen,” Freese explained.

“I think Alex is really underrated in the way that he happened to be in a band with his brother [Eddie Van Halen] who was an alien and you know took so much of the f*cking spotlight,” he continued. “And then there were guys I started by the time I was I don’t know 11 or 12 and reading modern drummer magazine and trying to get into like some prog rock or Jazz sh*t or whatever. Just studio drummers and guys that were a little outside of the rock and roll realm.”

Freese’s respect for Alex Van Halen extends beyond verbal appreciation. His recent performances and tributes demonstrate this admiration in action.

The performance showcased both Freese’s technical expertise and Alex Van Halen’s enduring influence on modern musicians.

Blabbermouth documented Alex Van Halen’s distinctive drumming style. His approach combines forceful beats with elegant flair, particularly evident in classics like ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’ and ‘Jump.’

Eddie Van Halen’s guitar virtuosity often overshadowed his brother’s work. However, Alex’s technical precision and innovative drum arrangements have inspired generations of drummers, including contemporary artists like Freese.

TDPRI emphasized how Alex Van Halen’s dynamic playing style transformed rock music throughout Van Halen’s career.

His signature combination of powerful rock beats and sophisticated technical elements created an influential template. Modern drummers, including Freese, continue to study and draw inspiration from this blueprint.
