Stryper frontman Michael Sweet has offered guidance to female musicians on how to build careers based on talent rather than appearance, in comments shared via Facebook.
Sweet spoke about the pressure women in music face to compromise their integrity for commercial attention.
“Girls, if you’re a singer/musician, don’t let people convince you to sell out and sell your body by posing in next to nothing,” Sweet said. “Stay classy and let your talent do the talking.”
“People will take you (and your music) so much more seriously (and with respect) if you retain integrity and class. In the end, you’ll be so much happier and you’ll have no regrets.”
“It’s okay to look great and take care of yourself and to make people notice. But, you don’t have to sell out. Stand strong and let the music do the talking. The old perverts may not like it but God will.”
The comments were made as Sweet offered his perspective on how female musicians can navigate their careers.
His advice focused on building long-term respect through artistic merit rather than seeking immediate attention through image alone.
Sweet’s emphasis on integrity in music comes from his own career trajectory and personal philosophy. He co-founded Stryper in 1983, and the band became the first overtly Christian heavy metal band to gain acceptance in the mainstream, reaching heights with more than 10 million career album sales worldwide and charting singles like “Calling on You,” “Honestly,” and “Always There for You.” The 1986 album “To Hell with the Devil” has been recognized as among the best Christian rock albums of all time.
Sweet has described his approach to music as rooted in faith and integrity. He has explained that his lyric writing is “biblically based,” reflecting his commitment to maintaining spiritual themes throughout his work. This philosophy has guided not only Stryper but also his solo career and advice to other musicians navigating the industry.
After personal struggles early in his life that led him to step away from Stryper at the peak of the band’s success, Sweet rejoined the group in 2003 for a reunion that produced the album “Reborn.” Since that time, he has continued to build momentum with projects including “When We Were Kings,” which charted at No. 2 on the Christian Albums chart, and a Christmas album released in November 2025 called “The Greatest Gift of All.”
Sweet’s current work demonstrates his continued dedication to his principles in music. His solo album “The Master Plan” was released on April 3, 2026, continuing his legacy of creating music grounded in faith and artistic merit. His message to female musicians reflects the values that have shaped his own lengthy career in an industry that often pressures artists to compromise their integrity for attention.
