Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen has launched a massive auction featuring various items from his career, including a black overcoat famously peed on by Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx in the 1980s, as detailed on Julien’s Auctions.
The auction listing describes the specific details of the rubberized overcoat and its current bidding status.
“Black Overcoat Peed on by Nikki Sixx. Current Bid: $350. Estimate: $600 – $800 USD,” the listing states. “A black rubberized overcoat, worn by Rick Nielsen and infamously peed on in Europe by Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe. The coat features silver-tone nautical button closures, shoulder epaulets, and two side pockets. Labeled ‘Alchemy of London.’ Size 44.”
Nielsen previously discussed the origin of the coat and how the incident occurred during a 2021 interview.
“I had this jacket or a coat, and it was rubberized,” Nielsen said. “It was around the time when all the punks were doing it. It was from… what was the place? There’s a market… Kensington Market? They had all the weird stuff. Well, I liked this thing because it was a rubber coat…and I got a Norton rubber belt with a Norton motorcycle insignia on it. It was just, it was awful. It was not me, but it was so disgusting, and I had it. And so I was standing there at the bar, and he was peeing. Luckily, it was a rubber coat because you’re peeing on the back of my coat… yeah.”
Sixx also recounted the event in Mötley Crüe’s 2001 collaborative autobiography, The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, expressing his regret.
“I kneeled on the stool, pulled down my leather pants, and did what I’d been promising to do all night: peed on Rick’s jacket,” Sixx said. “He didn’t even realize anything was happening until it started dribbling down his pants and onto the floor. I thought it was pretty funny at the time, but when I went up to my room afterward, I felt terrible: I had just pissed on my hero.”
The auction is currently active, with the coat holding a bid of $350.
The listing is not a standalone curiosity but one lot within a much larger career retrospective, which gives the coat its wider context among guitars, vehicles and stage-worn clothing.
Julien’s Auctions is presenting The Rick Nielsen Collection on October 24, 2026, live and online from Nashville’s Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum. The sale includes more than 300 items, among them over 70 guitars, two vehicles, stage clothing, handwritten lyrics and a customized tractor. A portion of the proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The auction house has framed the scale of the sale as a first for the Cheap Trick guitarist. It wrote, “More than 300 pieces from Nielsen’s personal archive of guitars, vehicles, stage-worn wardrobe and handwritten lyrics will head to auction, led by the custom five-neck guitar he’s never before offered for sale.”
The origin of the coat itself traces back to the two bands sharing a stage in London during the mid-1980s. Mötley Crüe and Cheap Trick shared the bill at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on February 14, 1986, while Mötley Crüe was touring behind Theatre of Pain. The incident took place within that European touring period, and Sixx later recalled repeatedly telling Nielsen he wanted to urinate on the rubberized jacket before finally doing so.
