Dante Bonutto, Director of A&R at Spinefarm Records UK, recently discussed Sleep Token’s rapid ascent in an interview on the Uprawr Podcast. He recalled recognizing the band’s potential early on, discovering them through a mutual contact who shared their independent releases and invited him to an early live performance.
After seeing the group support Perturbator in London, he immediately understood their artistic promise. “I mean there was already some independent releases that not albums had come out and then a friend of mine who was managing them. He invited me to go he sent me some music which I really loved and invited me to go and see a very early show. They were supporting Perturbator at Ulu in London and I went to that show and I think while it was obviously formative, all of the ingredients were very much there,” Bonutto said.
He explained that from the outset, he and his team sensed the band possessed something exceptional. Bonutto highlighted the significance of the band’s third album, “Take Me Back to Eden,” praising its artistic depth.
“There was clearly a huge talent and a huge vision bubbling away there. And I really wanted to be involved as soon as possible and happily were able to do the deal. And I think the third album the band made, you know, Take Me Back to Eden is an isn’t is I mean they’re all great records and the fans love them all. That I think the third one is an absolute masterpiece. I really do. I think it’s an incredible piece of work, but I love them all because I was involved with them all, you know. I think from the beginning, myself and my colleagues always felt there was something very special about the artist,” he continued.
For Bonutto, one of the most striking aspects of the album cycle was watching its momentum unfold through digital metrics. He described how its breakthrough became visible minute by minute across online platforms. “I do think what was interesting with that was and this something I’d never experienced before because and this relates back to the, you know, the internet in a way and the way the music is consumed now was when when when Take Me Back to Eden was breaking, you know, it was breaking in real time and we could watch it breaking in real time. Whenever I went to my computer and I refreshed anything, there was another million of something had happened on that. And I just this is just this is breaking in front of my very eyes. It’s just unbelievable, you know, and it just didn’t stop, you know. So satisfying when something that great gets recognition,” Bonutto said.
The data supported his experience. According to The PRP, Take Me Back to Eden became Spotify’s most-streamed metal album of 2023, surpassing major releases and earning over 357 million streams. This demonstrated how modern listening habits and online engagement can propel an album forward at unprecedented speed.
Its commercial impact matched its streaming momentum. Music Week reported that the album debuted at No. 3 on the UK charts, with 11,611 first-week units and a total of 132,796 sales across formats. Compared to earlier releases like Sundowning and This Place Will Be Your Tomb, this marked a massive leap for the band. Rock Sound noted Sleep Token reached 3.1 million monthly Spotify listeners, with tracks such as “The Summoning” nearing 92 million plays. Their rising profile even resulted in multiple UK Top 40 singles at once—an uncommon feat for a metal band.
This breakthrough transformed Sleep Token from a cult favorite into one of metal’s most prominent acts. The band moved quickly from small club stages to headlining arenas, including Wembley, and expanded their touring footprint across the UK and the U.S. Their trajectory illustrates how streaming-era visibility and real-time digital analytics can accelerate a band’s rise while allowing them to maintain their creative identity.
