Tool’s Justin Chancellor recently sat down with Revolver and shared his top eleven picks of non-metal albums for metal heads. One of the guitarist’s picks was the Melvins so Justin went into detail of why fans should pay attention to frontman Buzz Osborne.
Since the band has such a long discography, Justin shared how hard it was for him to narrow down to his favorite. He said:
“They have so many albums, it’s hard to keep track of them, but to me this is one of the most well-rounded rock albums that they did. It was also recorded at A&M studios a long time ago, which is the room where [TOOL] recorded ‘Fear Inoculum.'”
The guitarist went on to share his experience workin with Buzz when Tool had the band on tour with them several times. He praised the singer by adding:
“We’ve had the Melvins on tour with us a few times and I find Buzz [Osborne] to be almost operatic in his delivery, and this album definitely goes through some kind of theatrical dynamics. Really slowing down the pace at points and the next thing you know you’re kicking it with a heavy rock song.”
Justin talked about the grit in Buzz’s voice and how he believes it will also appeal to metalheads’. The rocker continued:
“He’s got a real rough, aggressive delivery in his voice, too, and I think the tightness of the band — the drumming of Dale Crover, who’s a super heavy, hard-hitting drummer — just means that there’s a real possibility you’ll appreciate this if you’re mostly into metal.”
