Late music icon Dolly Parton spoke about retirement and her unfinished dreams just four days before her passing, in an interview published by People Magazine.

During the conversation, Parton opened up about the health challenges she had been managing while caring for her husband, Carl, and reflected on her history of overcoming health struggles.

“As I’ve shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl,” Parton said. “You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to manage something like this. Back in the early ’80s, I was down for several months with female issues, and I was struggling with my weight at the time too, so it’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health.”

Parton also discussed how public attention has changed over the years due to social media, while emphasizing her determination to keep working on her goals.

“But I think because we live in a 24/7 world with social media, everything gets magnified in ways it wasn’t years ago,” she continued. “I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I’m the Queen of Social Media AI! Seriously, though, even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’! You know me — as I’ve often said — I’ve dreamed myself into a corner and I still have so many things I want to achieve, so I’m gonna keep on working as long as I can to see everything come to life.”

She further explained her decision regarding touring and live performances, noting her commitment to her fans.

“I hate to cancel anything I’m committed to, but I just couldn’t do the shows at the level I would want them to be, and in the way that I know my fans would expect them to be,” Parton added. “I definitely plan to do special performances in the future, but I won’t tour anymore like I used to.”

Parton’s comments came during a period marked by both personal loss and continuing health concerns. Her decision to remain involved in music and her other projects reflected the resilience that defined her public life.

Carl Dean died in Nashville on March 3, 2025, at the age of 82. Parton announced his death publicly after nearly six decades of marriage.

Dean had been ill for some time before his death. Parton’s final interview suggested that she had focused heavily on caring for him and had postponed addressing some of her own medical needs.

The singer’s health concerns also affected her public schedule. She had recently canceled an appearance connected to Dollywood while dealing with unspecified health issues.

Even during that difficult period, Parton remained focused on her creative work and her long-term legacy. Her remarks showed that she viewed retirement not as an end to performing, but as a shift toward special appearances and completing the projects she still hoped to bring to life.

These reflections offer a final look into the legendary singer’s enduring work ethic and dedication to her craft.
