Guns N’ Roses keyboardist Melissa Reese, who took some time off from the band due to undisclosed health issues, shared new photos with former Guns N’ Roses drummer Frank Ferrer and Brain Mantia. The post sparked concerns about her delayed return to the band and fueled rumors of a silent exit.
Reese captioned the images simply: “Happiness. Soul is smiling. Say less. Miss you all.”
A Guns N’ Roses fan wrote about Melissa’s post on Reddit: “She looks happy and healthy in this picture with Brain and Frank, I wonder she also got fed up of the touring and left the band or something. Her backing vocals were pretty great, apart from that she did not do much because they are still able to play Madagascar and There Was A Time without her.”
Another fan pushed back: “She was great, of course they can play without her, that doesn’t mean it didn’t sound 10 times better with her in, not just in those two songs but in most. Axl really can use a female vocals to complement his own. I hope she’s back.”
So far, neither Reese nor the band has confirmed that she has left the group. The speculation rests on an Instagram post and an extended absence, not on an official announcement.
The rumors are easier to understand in the context of Reese’s decade in the band and the way her absence was announced. Her history with Guns N’ Roses, the band’s own statement about her time away, and the recent turnover in the drum chair all shape how fans are reading a single set of photos.
Melissa Reese joined Guns N’ Roses in March 2016 as the band’s second keyboardist, replacing Chris Pitman. She is credited with keyboards, synthesizers, sub-bass, programming and backing vocals, handling all electronic sounds during live performances.
She is the first woman to join the band’s ranks as a full-time member in its history. She arrived as Guns N’ Roses prepared for the reunion tour that brought Slash and Duff McKagan back, and she has been listed on releases from “Absurd” (2021) onward.
Reese was recommended to the band by Bryan “Brain” Mantia, the former Guns N’ Roses drummer, after the two had worked together on several projects. That connection helps explain the picture that started the chatter: Reese posing with Mantia and Ferrer is a gathering of players from the same extended GN’R circle.
The band announced one day before its 2026 tour began that Reese would not be joining the run. Rolling Stone Australia reported the same, noting the statement landed on the eve of the March 28 kickoff date, and that Reese has not publicly commented on the matter.
The band’s statement read: “Melissa Reese will not be joining the band on tour due to unforeseen personal reasons. We hope our fans understand.”
Isaac Carpenter replaced Frank Ferrer after Ferrer’s “amicable” departure in March 2025 following 19 years with the band. Ferrer joined in 2006, succeeding Mantia, and later said his exit came with “disappointment that this chapter came to an end.”
Ferrer was originally intended as a short-term substitute: “brain Mantia’s wife was due to have a baby while the band had a tour booked, and the idea was to recruit a sub for two weeks until Mantia returned.” The two-week fill-in turned into a 19-year tenure.
That history is why the photo lands the way it does. Ferrer and Mantia are both former Guns N’ Roses drummers and both part of Reese’s professional past, so a friendly reunion shot reads to some fans as a farewell rather than a catch-up. Until Reese or the band says otherwise, that reading remains speculation.
