Avenged Sevenfold canceled a show in Chula Vista, California, shortly after the opening acts Kim Dracula and Falling In Reverse completed their performances on October 7. M. Shadows turned to X to explain the last-minute decision, citing health issues as the reason:

“So sorry, San Diego: the reason we wait till last min to cancel is because 99% of the time, we can sing through a sickness or get through the show without injury. The morning of Aftershock, I woke up with a virus… We played through what I felt was a great show… After the show, the vocal cords were intact and felt great.”

He explained the sickness’ effect on his voice despite the measures taken for recovery:

“I took yesterday at home to sit in a steam room for about 6 hours, take vitamins, and do everything possible to flush this sickness. Still, the voice felt fine…. Waking up this morning, the sickness was going away, but I noticed it felt like it was accumulating in my vocal folds. As the day went on and I did my warm-ups, it was clear that it was sitting in there and fighting to let me even speak. As a last-ditch effort, I had a doctor administer a steroid to help me get through the show…”

Referring to the current condition of his vocal cords, the singer added:

“At around 8:30, it was obvious that that was not going to work for tonight and that it was better to live to fight another day. Again, there is no vocal cord damage… I simply am sick and can’t make the noises I need to make. We will come back… So sorry for those who traveled.”

In addition to that, Avenged Sevenfold shared a tweet mentioning that the new date for the Chula Vista show would soon be announced. Later, this post prompted a thread between M. Shadows and a few fans about the band’s stage performances and tour dates.

During the chat, an X user shared their hopes for the rescheduled concert to take place after their Halloween visit to ‘loved ones in NC,’ to which M. Shadows wrote:

“Yeah. Nothing is perfect… [We] gotta have crew avail, venue avail, and be able to get all the equipment down there from Michigan… All on our dime… Plus, all these guys have families… Stuff like this just sucks. Doing what we can.”

When another follower mentioned:

“The logistics of touring, especially as you get bigger and need bigger venues, has to be a mind-numbing process. Whoever you got doing it, mad props to them. That’s a tough gig!”

The singer also explained:

“Yes. That’s why it’s frustrating when people think we cancel with no regard for stuff. We now have double the costs or more for 1 show… Plus, time from the crew and getting gear back in the area. It is a lot, but it’s life.”

Avenged Sevenfold’s 2023 tour started in late September to support its latest album, ‘Life Is But A Dream…’ Despite the cancellation, it is set to continue with a new date at Isleta Amphitheater in New Mexico on October 10.
