Dave Mustaine has opened up about his emotional connection to his former band Metallica. He shared candid reflections on what he truly valued during his time with the legendary thrash metal group. In a recent interview, the Megadeth frontman discussed the band’s cover of Metallica’s “Ride The Lightning,” revealing the one thing that stands out most in his memory.
When asked about potential comments from Metallica members regarding Megadeth’s version of the classic track, Mustaine responded thoughtfully: “No, and I don’t expect to. I know they’re pretty aware of what’s going on in the world, and I’m sure at some point someone will say something to them, and it’s up to whether they want to listen to it without prejudice or not.”
The guitarist then made a poignant admission about his years in Metallica. “Honestly, that band was about having fun, and that’s one of the things that I missed, the brotherhood and the fun,” Mustaine said. He highlighted the camaraderie that defined the early days of the band.
Despite the well-documented tensions between Mustaine and Metallica over the decades, his feelings have evolved significantly. “Well there isn’t any resentment now. I’ve always respected and loved James’s guitar playing, and that’s why we did the last track on the record. I’ve got my own band that I love, and it just felt right to do a version of a song that I had written earlier with Metallica, and put my DNA on it,” he explained.
Mustaine’s recent comments reflect a broader shift in his perspective on Metallica. Metal Injection reported that Mustaine has acknowledged his relationship with the band is “in a better place than ever.” He has even poked lighthearted fun at Kirk Hammett while recognizing that past antagonism toward the band was unfair. This marks a significant departure from the contentious dynamic that characterized much of their history.
The Megadeth leader has also praised Hammett’s technical abilities in recent interviews. Metal Injection noted that Mustaine acknowledged Hammett “honorably” attempted to replicate Mustaine’s solos on early Metallica tracks. Hammett has remained “steady” as a guitarist throughout his tenure with the band.
