Deep Purple keyboardist Don Airey discussed the band’s recent resurgence in an interview with Sonic Perspectives. The veteran musician reflected on how guitarist Simon McBride’s addition has brought new energy to the legendary rock band.
“It was great when he came in. He just fitted straight in and everybody woke up from their long sleep,” Airey said. “We all started rocking again and riffs started pouring out and everyone was very enthusiastic.”
“We didn’t expect it to be the success it was I must say,” he continued. “It was a bit overwhelming and very gratifying for everybody in the band. It’s given us a new burst of energy. So, we’ll be keeping it going.”
McBride’s integration into Deep Purple has become a significant turning point for the band. This change has led to several notable developments in their musical journey.
Previous Collaborations

FX Pedal Planet reports that McBride’s transition into Deep Purple was exceptionally smooth. His previous collaborations with band members Ian Gillan and Don Airey on their solo projects facilitated this integration.
The established musical rapport created immediate chemistry when McBride joined as a permanent member in 2022. This connection allowed the band to quickly find their new groove.
Impact On Songwriting

Blabbermouth notes that drummer Ian Paice has acknowledged McBride’s influence on the band’s songwriting process. His addition has brought a more riff-oriented approach to their music.
This shift in musical direction has revitalized the band’s signature sound. They have maintained their classic rock foundations throughout this evolution.
