Vocalist Jeff Scott Soto has voiced his frustration with the music industry’s handling of Eddie Van Halen’s passing. He argues that the legendary guitarist deserved a tribute comparable to those given to other iconic musicians.
In a recent Instagram post, Soto expressed his disappointment after witnessing a heartfelt tribute to Rob and Michele Reiner at the Oscars. He pointed out the stark contrast between that sendoff and the music world’s response to Van Halen’s death.
“After seeing the heartfelt, considerate and even humorous tribute to Rob and Michele Reiner on the Oscars last night, it makes me even more annoyed the music world didn’t handle losing an important, trailblazing icon like Eddie Van Halen in the same fashion!” Soto stated.
Soto highlighted examples of more prominent tributes given to other musicians. He noted that Taylor Hawkins received two tributes and Freddie Mercury’s sendoff was “monstrous.” He emphasized that Van Halen’s importance as a legend warranted similar recognition from his peers and the industry at large.
“But the Grammys blew it in this, as did so many other outlets who should have given him his proper salute, it’s a real shame!” Soto concluded, directly criticizing the Grammy Awards and other major music institutions for their oversight.
Soto’s criticism underscores the broader significance of Eddie Van Halen’s contributions to rock music and the expectations surrounding his commemoration. Hard Rock Info reported that Van Halen’s influence continues to resonate with fans and musicians alike. This is evidenced by the ongoing celebration of the band’s classic albums. The 40th anniversary edition of Van Halen’s landmark album “5150” was released in March 2026, demonstrating the enduring interest in the band’s catalog and Van Halen’s revolutionary guitar work that shaped modern rock music.
