John Carpenter’s ‘Cathedral’ is not really a comeback album. It’s more like another chapter in a career built on horror, music, and film. The record comes out alongside Carpenter’s first original graphic novel, so it works more like a soundtrack than a standalone release. At this point in his life, Carpenter is not looking back. He is still making new work that fits his style.

This is a family project. Carpenter worked on it with his wife Sandy King, his son Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies. That makes the album feel personal. It is not a detached studio record. It exists to support a story that lives in both a book and a record.

The sound here mixes hard rock, metal textures, and Carpenter’s usual electronic style. There are haunting electronics and heavy guitar work. The single “Revenge” leans harder into metal than Carpenter’s earlier synth-driven songs.

‘Cathedral’ is built around mood and atmosphere. It is not trying to surprise anyone or reinvent anything. For people who miss Carpenter’s movies, this is probably the closest thing to a new film he has made in years. The album works best when you treat it as part of a larger horror story.

Most of the early conversation around this project focuses on the fact that Carpenter made his first graphic novel at the same time. That is unusual for him. Fans are curious about the heavier direction and whether the album stands on its own without the book. It is still early, so people are treating ‘Cathedral’ like a genre piece more than a typical album release.

For metal and metalcore listeners, this album is not going to change the game. But it does show that atmosphere, heavy riffs, and storytelling can still work together outside the usual metal scene. The record sits somewhere between synth-heavy horror music and guitar-driven rock. That makes it worth a listen if you care about texture and concept more than raw aggression. The album’s job is to serve Carpenter’s story, and it does that well.
