Review Overview

Cheap Trick’s August 5 show at the Troubadour wasn’t planned — it was a scramble. When ZZ Top pulled out of their Hollywood Bowl co-headline date that same night, Cheap Trick announced a replacement club show within hours. The room sold out fast.

What could have been a dead night in Los Angeles turned into something more interesting. The Troubadour carries real weight as a venue, and dropping a band of Cheap Trick’s stature into that room — instead of the Bowl — changed the entire dynamic of the evening.

The setlist covered the expected ground: “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” “Dream Police,” a cover of “Ain’t That a Shame,” and a handful of deeper cuts. No surprises, but no filler either. The band played to the room, not to a stadium.

The crowd that packed in was not a casual one. These were people who moved quickly when the show was announced, and the energy in the room reflected that. A sold-out Troubadour with a motivated audience is a different beast from a half-interested Hollywood Bowl crowd.

There was no elaborate production — no staging, no light show worth mentioning. That’s not a criticism. A club show at the Troubadour doesn’t need it, and Cheap Trick didn’t try to compensate for the change in venue. They just played.

The Troubadour date ended up being the most talked-about stop on their August West Coast run, which is a strange outcome for a show that almost didn’t happen. Sometimes the canceled show is the one people remember.

Summary
A last-minute club show that turned a canceled arena date into an unexpectedly memorable night. Cheap Trick delivered a straightforward, professional set without frills, leaning on their catalog and the room's charged atmosphere. The Troubadour's intimacy and the quick sellout gave the evening a spontaneity that a standard Hollywood Bowl appearance could not have matched.
