“I’d like to be remembered for being good to less fortunate people, not just as a musician that plays really fast,” Mustaine said. “The things that I’ve left behind for younger guitarists and singers, stuff like that is always really important, knowing that you’ve done something that has been rewarding. I don’t want a statue left behind for me or anything like that.”

“But I think it’s really great when we get to come to places and see that there’s something there that has made a difference.”

The comment fits a long pattern in Mustaine’s career, and it arrives at a moment when he has been reflecting on his life more openly than ever. Those reflections are collected in his new memoir, which gives his words about legacy a deeper context.

In My Darkest Hour is a memoir by Mustaine and Joe Layden published by the imprint in 2026. The book covers both his music life and his personal battles, including the serious health problems that shaped how he now talks about the mark he wants to leave behind.

The book details his cancer journey and frames his new outlook on strength and resilience. Mustaine has said that his cancer diagnosis changed how he views life and the people around him. The memoir also describes how family support and faith helped him stay focused during treatment.

The book recounts his throat cancer diagnosis in 2019 and his eventual recovery, adding more context to his remarks about mortality and legacy. That history gives added weight to his request that fans remember his work and generosity rather than memorials.

Mustaine has been promoting the memoir with a three-city book tour, underscoring the personal nature of the project. The book follows a period in which he has spoken more openly about illness, family, and the life he hopes to leave behind.
