Bret Michaels, the legendary frontman of the rock band Poison, has shared an update on his recent health crisis. He underwent emergency surgery for kidney stones after continuing to perform through the painful condition across multiple shows.

Thanking the doctors, nurses, and frontline workers who cared for him, he wrote, “On this Wisdom Wednesday, the first thing I learned is complete gratitude for the frontline workers, doctors and nurses who this week have recently taken care of me, as the kidney stone (after almost 7 days of waiting it out) would not pass.”

Despite the growing pain, he continued performing in Charleston, West Virginia, Grantville, Pennsylvania, and at a special private show at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane for veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. “The pain became intense but, as usual, I played through Charleston WV, Grantville PA and a special private show at Fairchild AFB in Spokane for veterans, active duty and their families. But immediately, the next day following that show, I was admitted to the hospital, as the pain became too much when the stone would not pass,” he explained.

He confirmed that the operation was successful and said he is now focused on recovering so he can return to the stage. “The operation has been done and is complete & I’m out of post-op recovery, and I’m doing everything within my power to feel better and continue playing great shows for great fans when I’ve got a complete clean bill of health.”

He ended the update by reflecting on the importance of the people who supported him throughout the experience, while adding a bit of humor. “Just want to say on this Wisdom Wednesday that I am wise enough to know how important family, friends, fans, doctors and nurses play such a vital role in our everyday health. Also just know, they eventually forced me out of my clothes and into a hospital gown lol as I had gone straight from the show to the hospital.”

Michaels has faced kidney stone issues previously, having undergone kidney stone surgery in 2020. That procedure did not slow his touring and recording activities. Beyond this specific ailment, he has managed type 1 diabetes since childhood and has overcome other serious health crises that could have derailed his career. He has consistently returned to performing at full capacity.

The musician’s resilience in continuing to perform despite severe pain reflects his dedication to his fans and the military community. His decision to seek immediate medical attention following the shows demonstrates a balance between his commitment to entertaining audiences and prioritizing his long-term health. Michaels remains focused on making a full recovery and obtaining a clean bill of health before resuming his regular touring schedule.

The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of health emergencies and how they can strike even the most seasoned performers. Michaels’ openness about his medical journey continues to inspire fans. It serves as a reminder of the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking professional medical care when necessary, regardless of professional obligations or scheduled commitments.
