Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolan has opened up about the band’s ongoing search for a new lead vocalist. He shed light on what the legendary rock band truly values in a candidate. Vocal prowess alone won’t cut it—the band is looking for someone who can handle the grueling realities of professional touring and mesh well with the existing lineup.

Your taste in news shouldn't be up to an algorithm — choose it yourself on Google!

“We just wanna get someone that understands how we work, how we tour, that the road isn’t always great, because it’s not for any band,” Bolan explained. “And we want someone with experience that knows that.”

The bassist emphasized the band’s transparent approach to potential candidates. He laid out exactly what they’re signing up for. “We discuss with them. It’s, like, ‘Here’s how we operate, and this is how long you’ll be away from home.’ We’re completely transparent. ‘And here’s how we’ve been doing it for 40 years.’ And they gotta decide, like, if you get the gig, you have to be ready for this. And sometimes you gotta leave the hotel room at 3:30 a.m. because we gotta be at the airport by five. And it’s just the way it is.”

Beyond logistics, Bolan stressed that chemistry and personality compatibility—what he calls “the hang”—are absolutely crucial to the band’s decision-making process. “The hang is so important. We’ve learned that over the years. It’s just, like, you could go out and do great shows, but sometimes you’re just, like, ‘I can’t be in a room with this guy anymore.’ [Laughs] You know what I mean? And I’m sure they say that about me too. But the hang is such a big part of it.”

The good news for potential candidates is that Skid Row isn’t in a rush. “The great thing is we have the luxury of time right now. We’re not in the middle of making a record. We don’t have a tour booked. We’re writing songs, we’re piling up some songs and whatnot, ’cause when we find someone, things are gonna start happening fast. We’ll hit the road again and we’ll probably go in the studio again. And so we’re taking our time because we have that luxury to do that.”

Bolan’s candid remarks reveal a band that has learned valuable lessons over decades in the music industry. The search for a new frontman isn’t just about finding the best voice—it’s about finding the right fit for a band with a complex history and demanding lifestyle.

Skid Row has launched a worldwide audition search in partnership with Sweetwater, the renowned musical instruments retailer, to find their next lead vocalist, as reported by Blabbermouth. This collaborative initiative marks a significant step in the band’s quest to fill one of rock music’s most challenging positions. The partnership with Sweetwater demonstrates the band’s commitment to reaching singers globally and conducting a thorough, professional audition process.

The decision to partner with Sweetwater underscores how seriously Skid Row is taking this search. By leveraging the retailer’s extensive network and resources, the band is ensuring that talented vocalists from around the world have the opportunity to audition for the role. This approach reflects the band’s understanding that finding the right frontman requires casting a wide net and giving deserving candidates a fair chance.

Skid Row has cycled through six different singers throughout its existence, a testament to the challenges of maintaining stability in a long-running rock outfit, as noted by Blabbermouth. While this might seem like a high number, Bolan pointed out that even legendary acts like Black Sabbath have experienced even greater vocalist turnover. Such changes are not uncommon in the rock world.
