Crashdiet founder Dave Lepard met his tragic end in early 2006 after a long battle with depression. The road leading to his death was marked by tension within his band and a period of isolation following the release of their pivotal ‘Rest in Sleaze’ album, which debuted at No. 12 on the Swedish album chart.
The Final Days And Death

According to Suicide Prevention Now, Lepard remained out of contact with friends and family for 20 days before a close friend discovered him dead in his apartment. His neighbors noted that he didn’t look like himself in his last few weeks while his family acknowledged his struggles with depression. However, they all maintained his suicide came as an unexpected shock.
Lepard’s period of silence followed mounting tensions within Crashdiet earlier that year. Blabbermouth reported rumors of internal conflicts at the time. Band members reportedly considered departure due to Lepard’s escalating drug use. Still, they expressed their deep sadness over the tragedy in a statement, saying, “As a bandmember, but most of all as a person, we will miss him for all eternity. Dave was nothing but a genius and a very special person.”
The Band’s State After His Passing

The band’s debut album ‘Rest in Sleaze’ (2005) stood as a testament to Lepard’s creative vision. Junkyard Rock Stories recognized it as one of the most influential glam/sleaze rock releases of the 2000s as the album helped revitalize the genre for a new generation.
Crashdiet initially declared they would not continue as a band following Lepard’s passing. They stated firmly, “Crashdiet consisted of four people and now one has left us.” The band later changed course with support from both the public and Lepard’s family. They brought in H. Olliver Twisted as vocalist. In the following years, several others took on the singing duty.
Lepard’s legacy wasn’t ignored, though. According to Last.fm, the annual Rest In Sleaze festival was started in his memory and contributions to music.
The Vandalization Of His Grave

The late singer’s name continued to make the headlines after his death, as well, when a disturbing event occurred in 2024. Chaoszine reported that vandals targeted Lepard’s grave along with 19 others during the night of July 22-23. The incident appeared random rather than specifically targeted though this still added another layer of tragedy to his story.
