REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin has addressed recent criticism regarding Richie Sambora’s live performance in a comment on rock journalist Mitch Lafon’s Facebook post. The discussion focused on Sambora and Phil X’s impromptu performance of ‘Livin’ on a Prayer.’

“I met Richie for the first time and hung out with him and Matt Sorum after the gig,” Cronin said. “Richie is a down to earth guy, funny as hell, and a great singer and player.”

“That encore of ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ was a last minute addition to the show, unrehearsed, and all live,” he continued. “The whole experience was awesome, and Richie Sambora is the real deal.”

Online discussions about the spontaneous performance of the Bon Jovi classic prompted this statement.

Cronin’s defense of Sambora emerges during a notable period in the guitarist’s return to performing Bon Jovi classics.

According to Guitar World, the performance took place at the Rock For Responders benefit concert on February 27, 2025. The event was held at the Battleship Iowa Museum in San Pedro, California.

The special event featured an impressive lineup of musicians. Sambora, Phil X, Orianthi, and Matt Sorum performed together to support Los Angeles’ first responders and military personnel.

Historic Guitar Connection

People Magazine emphasizes the unique significance of the performance. The event created a rare collaboration between two eras of Bon Jovi guitarists. Phil X had replaced Sambora in the band in 2016.

This unexpected pairing created a memorable moment for fans. It united different chapters of the band’s history in one performance.

Band Relations Context

Blabbermouth reports that Sambora’s departure from Bon Jovi remains a topic of ongoing discussion. The guitarist has expressed openness to rejoining the band if Jon Bon Jovi’s vocal health improves.

The recent performance and positive reception from fellow musicians like Cronin demonstrate Sambora’s enduring connection to the band’s legacy. This connection persists despite his departure from the official lineup.
