Sammy Hagar recently weighed in on the possibility of a Van Halen reunion in response to a fan’s question on Instagram. Asked whether the legendary band could ever reunite, Hagar made it clear that while his desire is strong, the reality of the situation makes it impossible.
“I would love that more than anything in the world, but Eddie is gone and Alex has sold his equipment and is physically unable to play,” Hagar said.
Although a full Van Halen reunion is no longer feasible, Hagar pointed to another way fans can still experience the band’s music live. He explained that he and several fellow musicians have effectively created a tribute within his current performances to honor Van Halen’s legacy.
“Michael Anthony and I with Kenny Aronoff and Joe Satriani play 14 Van Halen songs in our set,” he continued. “Come see us March Vegas residency or a summer tour about to be announced.”
Behind the band’s long-standing inactivity lies a more complicated story. According to Sonic Perspectives, Eddie Van Halen had been seeking reconciliation with Hagar prior to his death in 2020. Quiet plans were reportedly underway for what was referred to as the “Kitchen Sink tour,” a proposed reunion that would have brought together Hagar, Eddie, Alex, and Michael Anthony for a highly anticipated comeback.
That possibility ended with Eddie Van Halen’s passing in 2020, but the final blow to any reunion hopes came later. Alternative Nation reported that Alex Van Halen sold his entire drum kit and gear collection in 2024 following neck surgery that left him physically unable to perform. The sale was widely viewed as a signal of his retirement from playing, effectively closing the door on any classic Van Halen lineup reunion.
While a full reunion is off the table, Hagar has remained open to limited or partial collaborations. Metal Wani previously noted that he had floated the idea of a one-night-only residency with Wolfgang Van Halen, though those discussions never developed into formal plans.
Rather than dwell on what might have been, Hagar has focused on celebrating Van Halen’s legacy through his ongoing “Best of All Worlds” tour and residency. Performing alongside Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff, Hagar continues to honor the band’s catalog by including 14 Van Halen classics in his set—giving fans a chance to relive the music that defined a generation, even if the original band can never reunite.
