It’s not rare to see rock and metal acts diss or reference each other in their music. One such incident occured when Rise Against’s song ‘Architects’ directly responded to Against Me!’s ‘I Was a Teenage Anarchist’ around fourteen years ago. The move didn’t really please the latter band’s frontwoman, Laura Jane Grace, causing some tension.
According to sources, Rise Against’s track deliberately echoed Against Me!’s lyrics. The song transformed these lyrics into a pointed commentary about maintaining revolutionary fervor.
Rise Against Took The Song As An Insult
Against Me!’s ‘I Was a Teenage Anarchist’ achieved notable commercial success back in 2010. According to Billboard charts data, the song reached number 16 on the US Alternative Airplay chart as legendary producer Butch Vig, known for his work with Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, enhanced the track’s impact in the punk rock scene.
But the track’s lyrics, “Do you remember when you were young and you wanted to set the world on fire?” rubbed Rise Against in the wrong way. The band, who regularly addresses social and political issues in their music, saw Against Me!’s song as an insult to their revolutionary spirit.
So, Rise Against responded with the lyrics, “Don’t you remember when you were young / and you wanted to set the world on fire / somewhere deep down I know you do,” in ‘Architects.’ McIlrath explained their reasoning to Dying Scene, saying, “I felt like the Against Me! song was really dismissive of the fire in my belly, and fire in many of our fans bellies. It was asking for, and deserved, a response.”
The Two Vocalists’ Reflection On The Feud
Laura Jane Grace didn’t really appreciate the way their song was perceived but approached the situation with humor in an NME interview. “I did hear it. It was a diss-track. I was like: ice-cold, y’all!” she recalled. She also noted that McIlrath didn’t let go of the tension and described an awkward festival encounter where he gave her “the stare-down and the cold shoulder.”
The situation cooled considerably by 2022. McIlrath shared his thoughts about the controversy in a Kerrang interview. “I certainly didn’t write that to create any kind of beef,” he stated. He still expressed disappointment about the controversy’s limited impact, comparing it to “just a tree that fell in the forest that no one heard.”
