In a recent Kerrang! interview, Zakk Wylde shared a humorous incident from the Pantera celebration tour. The Black Label Society frontman suffered a hand injury during meet-and-greet sessions. This injury forced him to perform with three fingers for over a month.
“I broke my hand when we were doing the Pantera celebration, doing the roulette wheel for the meet and greets,” Wylde explained. “I spin the wheel, and if they win… well, everyone’s a winner all the time. Anyway, the ball bounced out, I went to go grab it, and I smashed my hand on the table and broke it.”
“I played with three fingers for the rest of the tour – a month and a half!” he continued. “I think that was Dime having fun at my expense. It’s already hard enough to play his stuff, and he must have been like, ‘I’ll just add this to the mix for the comedy…'”
The guitarist made a lighthearted suggestion about late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s spirit causing the accident. This added a touching note of humor to what could have been a tour-threatening injury. The incident stands out as particularly noteworthy given Wylde’s history of overcoming performance challenges.
Resilience In Performance

Premier Guitar reports that doctors often encourage musicians with hand injuries like ‘boxer’s breaks’ to maintain moderate playing. This approach has proven beneficial, as continued playing can support the healing process.
Professional musicians frequently demonstrate their adaptability during recovery periods. Many have developed creative solutions to modify their playing techniques while healing.
Personal Health Challenges

The Rockpit documents Wylde’s previous battles with serious health issues. Blood clots compelled him to transform his lifestyle and eliminate alcohol consumption completely.
His perseverance through these obstacles demonstrates his unwavering commitment to his craft and fans. This recent hand injury represents just another challenge he has faced with characteristic humor and resilience.
The Show Must Go On

The Pantera celebration tour incident highlights live performance’s unpredictable nature. It also emphasizes the crucial role of adaptability in professional musicianship.
Wylde’s completion of the tour while playing complex Pantera material with just three fingers demonstrates his exceptional skill. This dedication to performing despite setbacks has become his career hallmark. It has earned him widespread respect in the metal community and reinforced his position as one of the genre’s most dependable performers.
