Former Sex Pistols singer John Lydon has opened up about his fractured relationship with his former bandmates. He blames them for compounding his grief during one of the darkest periods of his life. In a recent interview, Lydon expressed his deep resentment toward the band, particularly regarding a legal battle that unfolded while his wife, Nora Forster, was dying of Alzheimer’s disease.

“I’ll never forgive them for the way that they piled that court case on me while my wife was dying of Alzheimer’s,” Lydon stated. “It was a most unfortunate act on their part, and then using Disney to strip-mine me. If I didn’t raise, say, $10 million after the first week, the case couldn’t go on. That’s money I could have spent taking care of my lovely Nora. They knew she was ill.”

When asked about the possibility of reuniting with the Sex Pistols, Lydon was unequivocal. “It’s in the minus infinities,” he said. “The dirt that they unloaded on me in a time where I was in real serious grief. No, I cannot forget about that.”

The conflict between Lydon and his former bandmates stems from a 2021 court case centered on the use of Sex Pistols music in the FX and Disney miniseries “Pistol,” directed by Danny Boyle. The series was based on guitarist Steve Jones’ 2017 memoir “Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistol.” Lydon attempted to block the use of the band’s songs in the production. However, the legal dispute took on a deeply personal dimension for Lydon, who was simultaneously caring for his wife as her health deteriorated.

The court ultimately ruled against Lydon after determining that a 1988 band agreement allowed decisions about the music to be made by majority vote among the members. Lydon’s attempt to veto the use of the songs was legally overruled by the consensus of his former bandmates, including drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones. The financial and emotional toll of the lawsuit proved devastating for Lydon. He has since described the legal proceedings as having “jeopardized” his ability to properly care for Nora during her final years.

Lydon objected to how the “Pistol” series portrayed the band’s history and legacy. He felt excluded from the creative process and believed the show distorted the events of the Sex Pistols’ rise and fall. The combination of losing the court battle, facing substantial legal costs, and being unable to prevent the use of the band’s music in a project he fundamentally disagreed with created a perfect storm of frustration and grief for the aging rocker.

The rift between Lydon and his former bandmates has only deepened in the years since the lawsuit concluded. Lydon has expressed shock that none of his former colleagues reached out to him following Nora’s death. This has further cemented his conviction that reconciliation is impossible. The dispute serves as a stark reminder of how business disagreements and legal conflicts can irreparably damage personal relationships, particularly when they intersect with profound personal tragedy.
