The band’s announcement highlighted Newsted’s dedication during his time with Metallica and his role in the era surrounding the iconic album.

“On Thursday, you’ll hear from one of the four men who made ‘The Black Album,’” the band stated. “He was there for all 301 gigs… first one in the building, last one out. His thunderous bass tone rattled speakers for millions of fans around the globe, and he’s the man behind the hypnotic intro to ‘My Friend of Misery.’”

The band also shared the broadcast schedule for his guest appearance.

“That’s right. Jason Newsted is checking in with Maximum Metallica as the Hero of the Day,” the band continued. “You won’t want to miss it. Tune in Thursday, August 13 at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT and 7 PM ET / 4 PM PT on SiriusXM Channel 42.”

This special broadcast marks a rare reunion between Newsted and his former bandmates.

Newsted’s appearance carries added historical weight because he joined Metallica in October 1986, following the death of original bassist Cliff Burton. He remained with the band until January 2001.

Newsted played bass on Metallica, commonly known as The Black Album, which was released in 1991. He also contributed to the album’s “My Friend of Misery,” a track noted for its bass-led introduction.

His tenure covered one of Metallica’s most important periods, including the band’s transition from thrash metal pioneers to one of the biggest acts in mainstream rock. His work on The Black Album helped connect the record’s weight and scale to the live performances that followed.

Newsted left Metallica on January 17, 2001, as the band prepared to begin work on its next album. At the time, he cited “private and personal reasons and the physical damage I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I love.”

Maximum Metallica provides the setting for this latest appearance. The SiriusXM channel features the band’s music, live recordings, and related stories, with programming also available on demand through the SiriusXM app.
