Paul Weller recently reflected on his favorite gigs and albums of the year, singling out the Sex Pistols’ show with Frank Carter at London’s 100 Club as a standout moment. He shared his thoughts during an interview with Mojo4Music.
When asked to name his favorite live performances of the year, Weller cited shows by Stevie Wonder at Hyde Park and Kneecap at Wembley before highlighting the Pistols performance as the clear highlight.
“But best of all… the Sex Pistols with Frank Carter at the 100 Club. It brought back loads of memories, of seeing the Pistols there in ’76,” Weller said.
He went on to praise both the band and their current frontman, adding, “They played brilliantly, and Frank Carter just brought it all to life. I’m really not sure if they’d have done that with Johnny. And Steve Jones, man – only Steve Jones sounds like that. He is the punk rock guitarist.”
According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the Sex Pistols have returned to the stage with a revised lineup featuring Frank Carter—best known for his work with Gallows and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes—taking on lead vocal duties in place of original singer John Lydon. The current lineup includes original members Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Glen Matlock, with the band announcing a series of concerts and tours celebrating their legacy, fronted by Carter in the U.K. and internationally.
John Lydon, however, has been outspoken in his opposition to the reunion and has firmly ruled out any involvement. He has criticized the band’s return with Carter, referring to it as “karaoke,” and has dismissed the possibility of reconciliation following legal battles and long-running disagreements. Lydon has stated that he considers himself to be the Sex Pistols and does not recognize the current lineup as the real band.
