Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares has responded to criticism regarding his management style and past comments from former drummer Raymond Herrera, asserting that “every band needs someone steering” in a post on X.

The exchange began when a fan brought up a 2004 interview with Herrera, suggesting that Cazares dismissed other members’ ideas. Cazares agreed with the claim and explained why he believes his leadership style was necessary for the band’s success.

“You need to watch an interview with Ray from 2004,” the fan commented. “Dino isn’t quite the band saving angel he makes himself out to be. The problems started way before Digimortal as band members’ ideas were often dismissed by Dino.”

Cazares responded by confirming the fan’s point and explaining the reasoning behind his decisions.

“Ray is correct,” Cazares said. “I’m glad I was that way, because SOANM, Demanufacture and Obsolete wouldn’t be the records they are if every idea made it in. Every successful band has someone steering the ship.”

The comments reference a period of major conflict and transition in Fear Factory’s history, as well as the albums that established the band as a leading force in industrial metal.

Fear Factory’s 2002 split followed “irreconcilable differences” between Cazares and vocalist Burton C. Bell after the band had spent roughly a decade together. The group later continued in a different configuration, with Herrera and bassist Christian Olde Wolbers left out of the next phase.

Herrera discussed the fallout in a 2004 interview with Maximum Metal, saying that he and Wolbers were surprised by the developments. He also noted that the former members had agreed not to discuss many details of the dispute publicly.

Cazares’ reference to Soul of a New Machine, Demanufacture and Obsolete covers the records that shaped Fear Factory’s musical identity. Soul of a New Machine established the band’s early death metal and industrial metal foundation, while Demanufacture and Obsolete became two of its most acclaimed and influential releases.

The band’s lineup has changed several times since that period. The current recording lineup includes vocalist Milo Silvestro, drummer Pete Webber and bassist Tony Campos, with Cazares serving as the group’s only remaining original member.

Fear Factory remains active under Cazares’ direction. The band’s official website lists ongoing activity and live appearances, while recent reports indicate that the group is preparing new material with its current lineup.
