Former Deep Purple and Dead Daisies vocalist Glenn Hughes, who recently announced his retirement from music due to health issues, shared a new update on Instagram revealing he is now recovering at home after undergoing open-heart surgery.
The update focused on his current condition following the major medical procedure and his appreciation for the care he received.
“Now home after an eight day stay, and a 10 hour open heart surgery, operation, at UCLA, Ronald Reagan, Medical Center,” Hughes said. “Gratitude beyond.”
This surgery follows his recent announcement regarding his retirement from music, where he explained the necessity of the procedure.
“This past year, I’ve had some health issues,” Hughes previously explained. “The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team, that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority.”
He also expressed his appreciation for his career and supporters.
“Grateful to have been chosen with a life full with the gift of music,” he continued. “Thank you for walking beside me.”
Further updates on his recovery may follow.
The latest news closes a difficult chapter that began in August, when Hughes first told fans he would step away from the stage. His recovery now brings the focus back to his health rather than his upcoming schedule.
Hughes has dealt with serious heart-related problems in the past. He underwent surgery in 2013 to repair an enlarged aorta, which makes his latest operation another major procedure in a long medical history.
The retirement announcement also reshaped his work with The Dead Daisies. The decision ended plans for The Purple Daisies, a collaboration that involved Hughes alongside Dead Daisies members Doug Aldrich, Tommy Clufetos and David Lowy.
Hughes made clear that the choice was not his to make after doctors reviewed his test results. “I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority,” he wrote in the announcement published on Glenn Hughes’ official website, where he also confirmed the cancellation of his live shows.
