Original Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing recently shared his reaction to bassist Ian Hill’s announcement that he is retiring from the band due to health issues, expressing his thoughts during an appearance on Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk.

Downing reflected on Hill’s long career with the band and acknowledged the health challenges that led to his decision.

“Well, it has been a very, very long time for everyone, and obviously if you do have some certain issues with your health, then you have to succumb when you get the call, I suppose,” Downing said. “But, like I say, Ian had — it was a long, good career, and very successful career.”

Downing also expressed some lingering regret regarding his own history with the band, noting that he wished things had played out differently when Glenn Tipton retired from touring.

“Yeah, obviously, it’s a bit awkward for me because it’s a pity that Ian didn’t accept me [back] in the band a few years ago [when Glenn Tipton retired from touring],” Downing continued. “I would be there now, even though he isn’t. But I wish him well, and all the best for the future.”

This reaction follows Hill’s recent retirement announcement, marking the end of an era for the legendary heavy metal band. Let’s see what comes next.

Downing’s remarks carry added weight because Hill’s exit closes another chapter in the band’s original lineup history. The two musicians were the longest-standing figures in Judas Priest’s past, and Downing’s regret touches on a decision that shaped the group’s recent touring lineup. The background behind both departures helps explain why his words landed with a note of resignation rather than bitterness.

Ian Hill announced on October 9, 2026, that he was retiring from Judas Priest after 57 years. Hill co-founded the band with K.K. Downing in 1969 and remained its only constant member, making him the longest-serving musician in the group’s history. He cited advanced arthritis in his left shoulder and right hand, along with other physical ailments, as the reasons for stepping down.

“For some years now, I’ve been struggling with the onset of the evil arthritis, which is now in an advanced state in my left shoulder and right hand,” Hill wrote in his retirement statement.

Davey Rimmer was reported as Hill’s replacement in the band. Rimmer is known for his work with Uriah Heep and Elegant Weapons.
