Staind frontman Aaron Lewis has spoken out against the prevalent use of backing tracks in modern live concerts. He calls the practice a disservice to paying audiences. In a recent appearance on The Anchormen podcast, Lewis criticized how many artists rely on pre-recorded instrumental and vocal tracks to enhance their live sound.

“I honestly feel like what I’m about to talk about, it’s robbing the person that is going to see a live show,” Lewis stated. “What tends to happen more often than not these days is that there’s full tracks running underneath what is getting played on stage. The band themselves could put their instruments down and walk off stage and the listener in the crowd would barely even notice if they weren’t looking at the stage to see everybody walk off. And that’s real. It’s real. The last three or four tours that we’ve done, we were the only person that wasn’t running tracks.”

The practice of using backing tracks in live performances has become increasingly common across the music industry. Artists seek to replicate the polished sound of studio recordings on stage. Many bands employ these pre-recorded elements to add extra instrumental layers and enhance vocal harmonies. They also use them to fill gaps in their live arrangements. This approach allows performers to maintain the sonic quality audiences expect while potentially reducing the technical demands on the band during a show.

Lewis’s stance reflects a growing tension within the music industry between production quality and live authenticity. While backing tracks can enhance the overall concert experience by delivering a fuller, more professional sound, they raise questions about the value of attending a live performance when much of what the audience hears is pre-recorded. The Staind frontman’s commitment to performing without backing tracks positions his band as an alternative for fans who prioritize genuine, unmediated live musicianship.

Throughout his career, Lewis has maintained this principle across multiple touring formats. His work spans from Staind performances to solo acoustic shows and country-influenced tours with The Stateliners. His touring schedule continues to emphasize live instrumentation without relying on pre-recorded tracks to supplement the band’s performance.

This commitment to authentic live performance has become part of Lewis’s artistic identity. It distinguishes Staind from many of their contemporaries in the rock and metal scene. As the music industry continues to evolve with advancing technology and production capabilities, artists like Lewis serve as advocates for preserving the raw, unfiltered experience that many fans believe defines a true live concert.
