Former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley shared insights about John 5’s transition into Mötley Crüe in a recent interview with Guitar Player. He revealed a personal moment between the two guitarists before John 5’s debut performance with the band in Atlantic City.

“John 5 is a dear friend of mine. He actually called me up, and he said, ‘I’m a little nervous about playing with Mötley Crüe,’ so he invited me for the first show. He wanted a little moral support,” Frehley disclosed.

“And then, me, him and Nikki [Sixx] were hanging out backstage after the show,” he continued. “But John is really technical. I mean… he can play anything. He can play stuff by Glen Campbell, and he’s just a really great, technical guitar player. He definitely surpasses me, you know? I just have one style. I can’t play 10 different kinds of styles — but John can play country, metal, and even more.”

Frehley’s candid revelation offers a glimpse into the personal side of this significant transition in Mötley Crüe’s history.

Guitar World documented John 5’s debut with Mötley Crüe on February 10, 2023, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. The performance became a pivotal moment in the band’s timeline as they performed tracks from their entire discography.

The guitarist demonstrated his versatility throughout the show. He used an impressive collection of custom Fender Telecasters to capture the authentic sound of each era in the band’s music.

Technical Setup And Approach

Consequence detailed John 5’s efficient approach to his live setup. His touring rig combines Marshall JVM tube amp heads with a compact pedalboard featuring Boss Compact Series pedals.

This streamlined setup showcases John 5’s ability to deliver Mötley Crüe’s signature sound while maintaining his distinct technical identity.

Transition Background

Planet Rock reported that founding member Mick Mars stepped back from touring due to ongoing health challenges. This development opened the door for John 5’s recruitment into the band.

The transition has yielded positive results. John 5’s technical expertise and versatility enable him to honor Mars’s legacy while bringing his own distinctive style to the band’s performances.
