According to The Biography, Ward’s journey to financial success began in Jacksonville when Cold caught the attention of Fred Durst. This connection led to the recording of their first acoustic tracks, ‘Ugly’ and ‘Check Please.’ The band collaborated with producer Ross Robinson to create their self-titled debut album in 1997.

Cold had their commercial breakthrough with 2000’s ’13 Ways to Bleed on Stage.’ The album became their most successful work. The singles ‘No One’ and ‘End of the World’ achieved radio play and chart success. Their following album, ‘Year of the Spider’ (2003), peaked at #3 on the Billboard Album Chart. Its single ‘Stupid Girl’ also reached #87 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The music industry has a big impact on artists’ earning potential. Ward shared his perspective in an interview with Hard Rock Haven. “Monetarily it is for the worst. Back in the day, you did make a living playing music. There were publishing deals; there were other outlets that you would have to ensure you were protected with money.” He elaborated on the dramatic decrease in publishing deals. “When you get 100,000 compared to 400,000 dollars, that is 100 grand split between four people that is not a lot of money.”

These industry changes shaped Ward’s career and Cold as a band.
