Journey singer Arnel Pineda has seemingly hinted at his exit from the band following a recent performance by Hugo Valenti in Tokyo, as seen in a post shared on Instagram.

The post, shared by musician Adam Holland, featured a photo of Steve Perry lookalike and soundalike Hugo Valenti performing with Journey during their show in Japan. Holland hinted that Valenti is beginning a new chapter, possibly with Journey, which prompted a direct response from Pineda.

“That’s the band right there,” Pineda commented. “Now I can step back. Congratulations Journey.”

This comment has sparked speculation about Pineda’s future with the band. However, no official announcement has confirmed that he has left Journey.

Pineda’s comment comes after a nearly two-decade run as Journey’s lead singer. Guitarist Neal Schon discovered Pineda through YouTube in 2007 after watching videos of him performing Journey songs. Schon later contacted Pineda and invited him to audition, leading to his appointment as the band’s lead vocalist in December 2007.

Pineda has remained with Journey since then and has become one of the band’s longest-serving lead singers. Recent coverage has also focused on the demands placed on his voice by the group’s extensive touring schedule, although no specific new health announcement has been tied to his latest comment.

Valenti, meanwhile, has built a career performing as a Steve Perry tribute artist. The Long Island vocalist has fronted Journey tribute acts for around 21 years, including Voyage and his current project, Hugo – The Ultimate Journey Tribute.

Valenti has also had a prior connection to Journey. He previously auditioned for the band when it was seeking a replacement for Perry. His vocal and visual resemblance to Journey’s former singer has remained central to his performances.

Journey’s touring plans have added to the uncertainty surrounding the band’s future lineup. The group’s 2026 Final Frontier Tour lineup includes Schon, Jonathan Cain, Pineda, Deen Castronovo, Jason Derlatka and Todd Jensen. The band announced the tour as a farewell run, but Pineda was still listed as the lead singer in the published lineup.

Journey has not officially confirmed that Valenti will replace Pineda or that Pineda has permanently departed. Further updates may follow as the band continues its touring cycle and fans await an official statement about its lineup.
