Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson shared a playful statement during the band’s August 29 concert in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He referred to Lake Ontario by its traditional name despite U.S. President Donald Trump signing an executive order directing the federal government to rename it Lake America. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada will continue to call the lake Lake Ontario.

Bruce Dickinson said, “Hello, Canada. Oh my God. It’s been traumatic. We got here. We crossed the Lake Of Ontario.”

The remark added a lighthearted moment to an ongoing political dispute between the United States and Canada, bringing the controversy directly into the band’s Toronto performance.

Trump signed the executive order on August 27, 2026. The order instructed the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Board on Geographic Names to take steps to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America within 30 days.

The order was presented as part of an effort to recognize what the administration described as American history connected to the Great Lakes. However, the move was also widely viewed as another point of tension in Trump’s escalating trade dispute with Canada.

The renaming would apply to U.S. government maps, documents and databases. Trump’s decision cannot compel Canada or international organizations to adopt the proposed name. The lake borders both countries, making the order largely limited to official U.S. usage.

Carney rejected the change and indicated that Canadians would continue using the name Lake Ontario. Canada does not recognize Washington’s authority to rename the body of water for Canadian purposes.

Iron Maiden’s Toronto appearance formed part of the band’s current world tour. The available reports identify the performance as taking place in Toronto on August 29 but do not provide a confirmed tour name or venue. SiriusXM Canada shared footage of Dickinson’s comment on Instagram, where the singer’s reference to “Lake Of Ontario” connected the concert to the wider controversy.
