Glen Matlock recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of John Lydon rejoining the Sex Pistols, addressing the topic in a statement to Express.
Matlock was clear about where things stand with Lydon, noting that a reunion is highly unlikely due to past disagreements. “There’s no way back for John. He’s painted himself into a corner, over politics,” Matlock said.
The Sex Pistols bassist went on to discuss the band’s current path, confirming that they are moving forward with new vocalist Frank Carter instead of trying to reunite the original lineup.
“I’ve got ideas for songs…we have to have a conversation, but we’ll definitely gig. No other band I’ve been in eclipses the Pistols. It’s a double-edged sword. I see myself as a songwriter but I’ve been a Sex Pistol or an ex-Pistol all my life. No matter how much you try and do other things, it is always there,” Matlock continued.
The reformed Sex Pistols lineup reflects a major shift from the band’s original formation. Original members Steve Jones and Paul Cook are continuing to perform alongside Frank Carter on vocals, as reported by Blabbermouth. This evolution marks a clear departure from the Lydon era.
However, the band’s momentum recently faced a setback. The Sex Pistols’ planned North American tour, originally scheduled for September through October 2025, was canceled after Steve Jones suffered a broken wrist, according to Blabbermouth. The shows have been postponed until his recovery, temporarily pausing the band’s return to the stage.
Matlock’s remarks highlight the ongoing tension between the band’s current and former members. John Lydon has voiced criticism of the group’s latest incarnation featuring Frank Carter, according to IMDb, underscoring the lingering divide between him and his ex-bandmates.
Despite the challenges, Matlock continues to be a driving force behind the Sex Pistols’ enduring legacy. As the principal songwriter of the landmark album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, he remains dedicated to writing new music and performing with the band’s present lineup. While the chapter with Lydon appears closed, the Sex Pistols’ story is still being written.
