Mike Portnoy has opened up about his evolving relationship with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie in a recent interview with Louder. His candid reflection emerges as the band continues their reunion performances after his return to Dream Theater.

“It’s no secret that I was always James’ biggest critic when I was in the band the first time around,” Portnoy admitted. “I have a very, very different take on it now. I went from being his biggest critic to being his biggest cheerleader. I want him to succeed. I want him to get out there and kill it, more than anybody in the band or in the audience at this point.”

“He’s just gotten stronger and stronger at every show,” Portnoy continued. “The relationship that’s mended between us now means a lot, and I guess it’s because it was the relationship that was harmed the most during my hiatus. For us to have healed and come back together in such a loving spirit means so much to me.”

This renewed friendship represents a significant milestone in Dream Theater’s journey. The band is currently embarking on several major ventures in 2024 and 2025.

Loudwire reports that Dream Theater launched their 40th anniversary tour with a spectacular show in London on October 20, 2024. The performance showcased a carefully curated setlist spanning their entire career.

The band delivers both classic hits and fresh material to their audiences. Their performances include the live debut of ‘Night Terror,’ a track from their new album ‘Parasomnia.’ This blend of old and new material showcases the band’s dedication to their legacy while embracing fresh creative directions.

North American Tour Plans

Loudwire reveals Dream Theater’s plans for an extensive North American tour. It began in February 2025. This tour marks a historic moment. It is Portnoy’s first performance with the band in the United States and Canada since his departure in 2010.

The North American leg creates a full-circle moment for both the band and their fans. The classic lineup reunites in venues across the continent after nearly 15 years.

Drummer World highlights how Portnoy’s return has generated unprecedented excitement in the progressive metal community. The reunion has reinvigorated the band’s creative dynamic. It has also healed long-standing personal relationships.

The positive transformation between Portnoy and LaBrie demonstrates the band’s maturity and unity. This new chapter sets the stage for what many fans anticipate will be another golden era in Dream Theater’s storied career.
