Journey guitarist Neal Schon is reportedly facing a critical deadline regarding his trademark application for a potential offshoot band, “Journey Beyond,” amid Journey’s ongoing farewell tour, as reported by Ultimate Classic Rock.

The report highlights that Schon might be having second thoughts about the trademark, as he has not yet completed the necessary paperwork to finalize the process.

“Almost six months have passed since Schon was instructed to complete a final step to trademark the group, called Journey Beyond,” music writer Nick DeRiso reported. “This would have capped a drawn-out application procedure that began way back on April 10, 2025. Schon must now meet a critical deadline this week – or risk having to start over.”

DeRiso further explained the timeline and the consequences of missing the deadline.

“The farewell shows kicked off in late February 2026, even as Schon’s attorneys continued corresponding with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,” DeRiso continued. “He finally received a ‘notice of allowance’ to trademark a group called Journey Beyond on March 24, 2026, but there’s more paperwork to do. In order to actually receive trademark protection, Schon ‘must file a statement of use or extension request within six months of the NOA issuance date,’ according to the USPTO. That’s this Thursday, Sept. 24. What happens if he misses the deadline? The application will be considered ‘abandoned.’”

If Schon missed the September 24 deadline, he may have to restart the entire trademark application process.

The trademark dispute is unfolding against the backdrop of Journey’s farewell touring cycle, which has grown well beyond its original schedule. The 2026 run is billed as Journey’s “Final Frontier” tour and includes arena dates across North America, with stops in major cities such as Pittsburgh, Washington, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City.

The band’s final touring chapter has also been extended several times. Tied to the tour, the fall leg added 40 more shows, beginning Sept. 12 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and running through Nov. 28 at Chase Center in San Francisco. That makes the farewell one of Journey’s most extensive touring cycles in years, even as its internal disputes continue offstage.

The legal fight between Schon and Jonathan Cain is part of a broader clash over Journey’s trademark and control of the band’s business identity. The two longtime bandmates have been locked in lawsuits while still performing on the farewell tour with lead singer Arnel Pineda, drummer Deen Castronovo, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, and bassist Todd Jensen.

That tension helps explain why Schon is seeking a separate offshoot. “Journey Beyond” would give him a way to keep performing and building on the Journey legacy under a different banner, while the trademark battle continues to limit how the name itself can be used.

The last leg of the farewell tour kicked off in September in Los Angeles and will close with what is expected to be an emotional homecoming in San Francisco in November. The itinerary underscores that the band’s final run has been expanded far beyond its original early-2026 dates, with Schon’s trademark deadline now arriving in the middle of it.
