Former Morbid Angel singer David Vincent has shared that he prefers Deep Purple over death metal.

Reflecting on his favorite albums from 2024, he mentioned, “Let’s see. It was 2024 when we just got off this tour,” before adding, “So there’s two things that struck me this year, one of which is an old record but I hadn’t heard it but I heard it. I heard it fresh and it’s really the last one that I just bought.”

He continued, “It’s a Deep Purple record. It’s called ‘Rapture of the Deep.’ We were having a meet and greet and I told my guitar player, I said, ‘Let’s get some background music going here’ and he goes, ‘Well, what do you want? Death metal?’ I said, ‘No, no. Put Deep Purple on.’ So it was just a random selection from Spotify and it kind of put these different things on.”

Vincent then described his reaction to hearing the title track, ‘Rapture of the Deep,’ saying, “And the song, the title track to that record, ‘Rapture of the Deep’ came on and I was listening to that. I’m like, ‘Is that Deep Purple?’ and then I heard Ian Gillan singing. I’m like, ‘Yeah, it is Deep Purple’ and I was like, ‘Man, this is great.'”

The musician went on to say, “So the next day I went to iTunes and I bought the record and I love it. Nothing like and I say this with all love and respect. Nobody writes songs like old guys do because they get in, they play and they’re all wonderful players. Ian Gillan is a huge influence on me. I love his vocals. I love everything about that record.”

Last year, Vincent shared his thoughts on modern death metal vocals during an interview with Sonic Perspectives. He expressed his frustration with how death metal vocals have become harder to understand, saying, “Well, everybody’s gotta do what’s right for them. That’s not right for me. But, again, I don’t have a lot of commentary about what other people do. I’m either a fan of it or I’m not, but that doesn’t matter.”

“Thankfully, there’s enough choices out there where folks can figure out if they wanna listen to this or that or what have you. So, from a vocal standpoint, I wouldn’t say that I’m inspired or have any influence at all from quote-unquote death metal singers. I do what I do, and the singers that I listen to are far and wide, but not really extreme metal,” he added.

Vincent will be performing with Vltimas in February and March across North America.
