‘Plush’ is one of those songs that instantly transports listeners back to the golden era of ’90s rock. Released in 1993 as the second single from Stone Temple Pilots’ debut album ‘Core,’ the song became an instant hit. It topped the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart and was even named the number-one song of 1993 on that list.

With its haunting melody, Scott Weiland’s signature vocals, and deep, enigmatic lyrics, ‘Plush’ remains one of the band’s most beloved tracks. But beyond its commercial success, the song carries a darker and more complex meaning than many might realize.

Inspired By A Murder Or A Heartbreak?

Scott Weiland revealed in multiple interviews that ‘Plush’ was loosely influenced by a real-life tragedy. In the early ’90s, a young woman went missing in the band’s hometown of San Diego. Her body was later discovered, and the chilling line “And I feel, when the dogs begin to smell her…” seems to echo that grim event. However, Weiland clarified that while the story shaped the song’s imagery, ‘Plush’ wasn’t meant as a direct retelling.

At its core, the lyrics reflect something more personal. In a VH1 Storytellers episode, Weiland explained that the song embodies the feeling of loss, confusion, and regret that follows a passionate but failed relationship. The suggestive imagery—shifting seasons, masks, and fading connections—deepens this interpretation.

A Visual Companion To The Mystery

The music video for ‘Plush’ adds even more intrigue to the song’s meaning. Directed by Josh Taft, it features Weiland performing in a dimly lit lounge, filled with shadowy, ambiguous visuals. Different versions of the video exist, but both include a striking final shot of a woman looking into a mirror. Whether she’s examining herself or disappearing into her reflection, it adds another layer of ambiguity to the song’s meaning.

Decades after its release, ‘Plush’ remains one of Stone Temple Pilots’ defining songs. Its eerie yet emotional lyrics, combined with a unique blend of grunge and ragtime-inspired chord progressions, make it a standout track.
