Godsmack frontman Sully Erna has firmly defended the band’s decision to bring in former Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini. He pushed back against fans who believe the virtuoso is overqualified for the position. In a recent interview, Erna explained the depth and complexity required to play Godsmack’s material, emphasizing that Mangini’s exceptional skill set was essential for the role.
“I’ve known Mike for 30 years,” Erna stated. “I knew him back in the ’90s when he was taking over for Extreme. I knew his level of play and his level of experience. I would have never put that kind of responsibility in his hands to just send him a live show, especially since we put out that double live album recently. I sent that to him and said, ‘Just learn this—the live version of every song.’ I would have never put that responsibility on him if I didn’t know he was capable of coming in and playing it pretty damn close, and that’s exactly what he did.”
Erna highlighted Mangini’s impressive debut performance. The drummer took the stage without any formal rehearsal. “He came in and did a phenomenal job on the first show,” Erna explained. “No rehearsal—we just did a long soundcheck, and I’m like, ‘He knows. He’s got this. Nothing is gonna be a train wreck.’ And he came in and surprised everyone. Of course, I had confidence in him because it’s Mike Mangini, and he’s just very qualified to do this job.”
Mangini officially joined Godsmack in June 2026, replacing Wade Murff. He made his live debut on June 12 at the Morton Amphitheater in Riverside, Missouri, as part of the band’s “The Rise of Rock” world tour. This marked a significant moment for the hard rock band, which has experienced multiple drummer changes in recent years following Shannon Larkin’s retirement in 2024.
The criticism surrounding Mangini’s appointment stems largely from a small but vocal segment of the fanbase. These fans are primarily composed of Dream Theater enthusiasts and supporters of former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. Mangini spent 13 years in Dream Theater before departing in 2023, when Portnoy returned to the progressive metal band. During that tenure, Mangini faced considerable backlash from fans who remained loyal to Portnoy, despite his technical mastery and dedication to the band’s complex catalog.
Erna addressed the notion that Mangini is overqualified by drawing a parallel to the band’s previous drummer. “Those people are a very small audience, and those people are mostly fans of Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy,” he said. “Poor Mike was in Dream Theater for 13 years, just trying to do his job and learn some very complicated music that Mike Portnoy chose to leave the band himself. Mike Mangini came into that position hired and caught a lot of shit for it. He had a lot of Mike Portnoy fans that didn’t wanna accept Mangini.”
The Godsmack frontman emphasized that the band’s drum parts demand technical excellence and meticulous attention to detail. “By saying that Mike is overqualified to play for Godsmack is just like saying that Shannon’s overqualified to play for Godsmack,” Erna explained. “I don’t think people realize the depth of detail that’s involved in Godsmack’s music as a drummer. Shannon’s an amazing drummer, and we both spent a lot of years and a lot of time designing those drum parts. Although they may not be as complicated as Dream Theater, they’re very detailed, and that calls for someone like Mike Mangini to fill that spot.”
Mangini’s transition to Godsmack represents a significant shift in his career. His appointment to the band marks a new chapter following his departure from Dream Theater. Former Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin has expressed confidence that Mangini’s role with the band will be permanent. The arrangement has already proven successful during the early dates of the tour, with Mangini demonstrating his ability to execute Godsmack’s intricate drum arrangements while maintaining the energy and precision the band demands.
