Lime Cordiale made a big splash in the Australian music scene with their mix of indie pop and rock, led by brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach. Their energetic sound and lively performances helped them build a strong fanbase fast. By 2020, they were topping the ARIA charts and landing spots in Triple J’s Hottest 100, cementing themselves as one of the country’s top indie acts.

Then came some major changes. Over the years, the band has seen a few lineup shifts, but the biggest one happened in June 2024 when longtime touring members Nick Polovineo and Felix Bornholdt left. Their music also started shifting around this time, which didn’t go unnoticed by fans.

A New Sound, Mixed Reactions

Lime Cordiale has never been afraid to experiment, but their latest direction has sparked some debate. Their 2022 EP ‘Cordi Elba’ with actor-musician Idris Elba took a more experimental turn, blending funk, pop, and hip-hop. After that, they released their third album, ‘Enough of the Sweet Talk,’ which explored relationships through a more structured concept.

Some listeners liked the album’s ambition and maturity, while others felt it didn’t have the same raw energy as their earlier work. Even though it kept their signature playful melodies, critics pointed out that it leaned on familiar formulas, making it feel a bit repetitive.

The album topped the ARIA charts, but fan reactions were also divided. Some longtime listeners thought the band had lost the spontaneity that made their early music stand out. A common complaint was that their newer songs didn’t have the same variety as ‘Permanent Vacation’ and ’14 Steps to a Better You.’

On the flip side, outlets like Rolling Stone Australia and Triple J praised the album for its polished sound and emotional depth. Some critics saw it as a natural step in the duo’s growth, though even positive reviews admitted it might not have enough surprises for early fans.

What’s Next For The Band?

Outside of music, the Leimbach brothers have been exploring new projects. In late 2023, they launched their own carbon-neutral beer, LARGO, as part of their push for sustainability. They’ve also been busy touring, teaming up with Ball Park Music for a nationwide run to promote ‘Enough of the Sweet Talk.’

For now, their success doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The big question is whether they’ll take more creative risks in their future releases or stick to what’s been working for them so far.
