Mötley Crüe recently sold out a live performance despite ongoing criticism and bassist Nikki Sixx admitting that the band uses backing tracks, prompting mixed reactions from fans on X.

The reactions followed a video showing the band’s performance. Fans expressed different opinions about Mötley Crüe’s use of pre-recorded tracks and the group’s live energy.

“Despite criticism for using pre-recorded backing tracks during live concerts, Mötley Crüe is filling almost every show!” a fan wrote in the video’s caption.

“That’s a shame. Vince putting in the absolute least amount of energy for the crowd,” another fan commented.

“Most bands use some sort of backing tracks/audio to help fill out the sound of the songs,” another fan said. “The issue with the Crüe is whether or not they are actually using pre-recorded vocals for Vince and he’s essentially lip-syncing.”

Another fan added, “They’re filling shows because Tesla is opening for them.”

Nikki Sixx previously addressed the band’s use of backing tracks while insisting that Mötley Crüe still performs its core instrumental parts live.

“Since we saw Queen using some to help during the song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ live, we understood that we could bring in elements that we could not do live like orchestras, saxophones, etc., etc., and sync them up with what we are playing and we do play 100% live,” Sixx said. “And it’s better for the fans and we enjoy being able to do what we did in the studio live. It’s a win-win for us.”

The latest reaction comes as Mötley Crüe continues to draw large crowds on a major North American tour, while questions about the band’s live performances remain part of the conversation.

Mötley Crüe’s 2026 run is titled The Return of the Carnival of Sins. The 33-date tour began on July 17 in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, and is scheduled to conclude on September 26 in Ridgefield, Washington.

Tesla and Extreme are serving as opening acts on the tour. The lineup has fueled some fan discussion about whether the support acts are contributing to Mötley Crüe’s strong ticket sales. The tour celebrates the 20th anniversary of Carnival of Sins and Mötley Crüe’s 45th anniversary.

The controversy surrounding the band’s live setup intensified during the 2023 dispute involving former guitarist Mick Mars. Mars’ lawsuit included allegations that Mötley Crüe relied on pre-recorded parts during the 2022 Stadium Tour. Sixx rejected the suggestion that the band fakes its performances and maintained that the additional tracks are used to enhance the live production.

Mötley Crüe’s current touring lineup features Vince Neil on vocals, Nikki Sixx on bass, Tommy Lee on drums and John 5 on guitar. John 5 took over guitar duties after Mars’ departure, and the lineup has continued on the band’s recent tours.

Neil’s vocals have also remained a frequent subject of fan criticism. Clips from recent performances have prompted renewed debate about his pitch, energy and alleged use of vocal assistance. However, the band continues to attract audiences, showing that its commercial appeal remains strong despite the ongoing scrutiny.

The debate over backing tracks, live vocals and performance authenticity continues to divide Mötley Crüe fans, but the band’s ability to fill venues suggests that the controversy has not significantly weakened its draw.
